Happy Birthday Owen!

with 3 comments

My sweet, adorable, lovable and oh so huggable baby boy is 3!

Three years ago today I was in NY staying with my parents in the same house that I grew up in. It was bitter cold. Snow had fallen the night before and the roads were covered with a wet slushy mess. I remember that A was worried about the road conditions. I had an 8AM appointment to be induced at a hospital that was 30 miles away. We kissed Abbey goodbye and got on our way. We stopped at Dunkin Donuts for coffee and something to eat. I didn’t talk much the rest of the way. I guess I was a bit nervous. I got settled in at the hospital and waited for the doctor to get the show on the road. He started me on Pitocin at 8:30AM. I had an epidural at 8:31AM. (If there was one thing I learned with my first labor it was that Pitocin = epidural! Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.) AND…Owen was born two hours later. That’s it. That’s all. Nothing more exciting or interesting really. It was so quick it was like a non-event event. Really. These past few years, though, he’s been more than making up for his boring entry into the world with all his nutty and zany antics.

p.s…. Owen gave me a birthday present on his birthday. He is officially potty trained! No more changing diapers. Of course now that I’ve written this down I’m sure we’ll have a day from poopy hell tomorrow and I’ll be cleaning up crap and pee most of the day. What a lovely thought.

p.p.s…here’s the CAKE.

a storm is coming, i’m sure…

with 2 comments

but for now, it’s rather calm.

The first week of 2008 has been rather quiet.  Well, as quiet as it could be with 2 kids at home on summer break.  Maybe quiet isn’t the right adjective, maybe uneventful is a better word to describe 2008 thus far.  Yes, I think that makes more sense as this house has been anything BUT quiet.

And things probably have been uneventful because a) I’m without a car and therefore sticking close to home or only as far as I can get on a bicycle, b) most of our friends are away at the Argentine/Uruguayan beaches or in the States visiting family and c) we are leaving for a 5 week vacation to the US in 7 days and are kinda just sitting around waiting for that to happen.  Kinda like how after Christmas I was just sitting around waiting for the New Year to begin. (I seem to be doing a lot of sitting around and waiting for something to happen.)

I’m thinking I should just enjoy and cherish whatever downtime comes my way in 2008 seeing how with the upcoming move, this year will be anything BUT uneventful.  I’m sure this is just the calm before the storm, a very very big storm.

We do have a few eventful things going on before we leave on Friday (and I’ll write more about our vacation soon) and one of them includes Owen’s 3rd birthday.  I can’t believe that he’s turning 3!  And yet, at the same time, I so absolutely can.  Does that make any sense?

So, back to the birthday and the most important detail of the whole thing: the cake.  Okay, so maybe Owen is the most important aspect of the whole birthday celebration because without him there would be no birthday and therefore no cake, but the cake comes pretty close.
I’ve decided to try my hand at making a dinosaur.  I’m going to use this as a guide and see what happens.  Cross your fingers, wish me luck, go find a four leaf clover, pick up a penny (but only if it’s heads up), rub a rabbits foot and do about anything else that will give me good cake making karma.  I’ll post pictures on Sun night, I promise.

Off to enjoy the uneventful day we have planned.  Enjoy yours.

Owen’s 3rd birthday is on Sunday and I can’t decide what kind of cake to make.  A dinosaur? A train? Something superhero-ish?  ACK!  I just can’t decide.  Some just seem too simple, others way to complicated.  And the more I look online for ideas the more I begin to think that my lovely cakes, the ones that I have slaved over and love so dearly and am oh so proud of,  really just suck.  And then wonder how I could have ever thought that I could sell one of my cakes.  So I’ve stopped looking online for ideas and have turned to you, my dear loyal readers (all 2 of you) for help.  Please send me suggestions?  And if these suggestions just happen to come with instructions, well, then, that would be great.

This past Saturday Santa Claus paid an unexpected (wink, wink) visit to the Marine House (that’s the place where the detachment of US marines that are assigned to the US Embassy live, in case you were wondering) and surprised all the kids with early gifts and candy. The party was planned by the Community Liaison Office at the Embassy and it was a wonderful afternoon.

Here’s Abbey and Owen with Santa. Neither one was scared though Abbey became quite shy when it was her turn to talk to Santa. When he asked her what she wanted for Christmas she just shrugged her shoulders and said “I don’t know.” When I ask her the same question I get a list a mile long. Owen on the other hand wasn’t in the talking mood and only nodded his head when Santa asked him if he had been a good boy.

Of course when told that I had to either bring a sweet or treat to share I jumped at the chance to try my hand at a new cake creation. Some people will say that I’ve become a bit obsessed with my new found ability but I’m just having fun.

I think this one turned out quite well. We left before the party ended but I’ve been told that there wasn’t even a single crumb left at the end.

I’m not even sure how you go into business making cakes but everyone keeps suggesting that I look into it. With everything that is going on right now I don’t think it’s in the cards, but maybe someday. Until then I guess I’ll just keep trying new designs, new recipes and new techniques. And I’ll share them with you all.

For those of you celebrating Christmas, here’s wishing you a very merry day tomorrow.

spidey for my baby

with 6 comments

It’s common around here for those children with birthdays during the summer vacation months (in other words, when school’s out)to have parties either before Christmas and therefore before everyone packs up and leaves for Punta del Este, Pinamar or Carilo or in March after school restarts. You can’t imagine all the parties we attend during the months of Nov/Dec and March.  It’s obscene. AND exhausting.

It happens that both of my children’s birthdays are in January (and contrary to popular belief, it was not at all planned that way) so we happen to fall into this category. However, in the two and a half years that we’ve been here I have never followed this trend and have always had the kids birthday parties on or as close to their actual birth date as possible.  It makes for a less confused child, especially when they’re turning 3.  This year however, because we are leaving for a 5 week trip to the States in January, and because Arran’s mom is visiting and leaving before Owen’s actual birthday, we decided to have Owen’s party a bit early.  And for all of you concerned with Abbey, her birthday will be celebrated in FL, on her actual birthday with a small family party at my parent’s house, then during a week long trip to Disney and finally with a small girls-only party at in the end of February.  I think she’ll be just fine.

So we had Owen’s party this past Monday and it was a huge success. I will post pictures and videos of the event closer to his real birthday but today I wanted to share with you all my new cake creation.

I can’t take credit for the shape of the cake (it’s a wilton cake pan) nor the colors of the icing (my mother-in-law was the colorist this time) but I can take 100% credit for the decorating. I was pleased with how it came out (as was Owen) but must admit that it was a lot harder then it looks and took a lot longer then i have anticipated. It might be a while until I try my hand at this one again.
